Smyth, John
(c. 1565–1612)
   Sect Founder.
   Smyth was educated at the University of Cambridge and he was ordained to the Church of England ministry. He was appointed lecturer of Lincoln Cathedral in 1600, but was dismissed for his unorthodox views. He then served a Brownist group and, in order to avoid persecution, went to live in Amsterdam. There he formed his own congregation, of which Thomas helwys was a member. Smyth was Arminian in theology, but advocated believer’s baptism. He baptised himself in 1608 and subsequently baptised Helwys and others. The community was called the Brotherhood of the Separation of the Second English Church at Amsterdam and it is regarded as the first General Baptist Church.
